Course Structure Artificial Intelligence - International

As a student of "Artificial Intelligence - International", you will become a specialist in developing interactive and self-learning applications with a deep understanding of intelligent processes, behavior, and perception - as well as cross-cultural contexts. You will design and develop AI applications that make use of machine learning, draw from huge amounts of data, handle complex problems, or can be used in robotics. Furthermore, you are an expert in AI-based image, speech, and sensor signal processing. You will gain the knowledge for these diverse tasks in the study program Artificial Intelligence - International at the OTH Amberg-Weiden at the Amberg location.

Artificial intelligence (AI) now permeates many areas of our lives worldwide. Knowledge and techniques from this field find a wide variety of applications in industry, in research and in everyday life. At OTH Amberg-Weiden, two AI bachelor's degree programs are offered (IKI & BKI) with a combined total of four exciting specializations:

International – „Incomings & Outgoings” (Head Dominikus Heckmann, start of IKI in summer semester )

Artificial intelligence is on the rise not only in Germany but worldwide. To meet the international challenges and opportunities, we offer an internationally oriented German-language AI degree program with the study of international aspects as well as intensive language courses in German for the "Incomings" and English for the "Outgoings". Graduates will find inspiring employment in science, research, as well as in business all over the world. To experience this, you will carry out your internship semester abroad and write your Bachelor thesis in an international environment. You will start your studies in the summer semester with specialist international courses from the study program KI-International taught in English and German. From the second semester on the core lectures are taught together with the regular KI study program in German.

Data Analytics & Computer Vision (Head Fabian Brunner, start of BKI in winter semester )

Data analysis techniques or "data analytics" are permeating the world of science and business at a rapid pace. Deep Learning algorithms, in particular, are fueling the innovation and performance gains of Artificial Intelligence. Data analytics is an established and accepted field that is finding enthusiastic use in both academia and business.

Smart Energy & Smart Home (Head: Frank Späte, start of BKI in winter semester)

The transformation of energy supply toward decentralized and renewable generation structures is a current challenge not only in Germany. Our future lies in an environmentally compatible and at the same time economical energy supply. However, in addition to applications in energy supply, there is also a direct need in households.

"Smart Energy" and "Smart Home“ are no longer unknown terms. Rather, they include topics related to energy transmission, energy consumption, energy generation, energy use, increasing the quality of living and quality of life, and use intelligent processes for this purpose that can ensure both safety and efficiency.

The technologies developed in this way are among the key disciplines of artificial intelligence. They are therefore a focus of the Artificial Intelligence degree program at OTH Amberg-Weiden.

Smart Robotics & Smart Media (Head: Matthias Wenk, start of BKI in winter semester)

The field of robotics has developed strongly in recent years. There is an increasing demand for highly flexible robot solutions for the markets. These not only reduce expenses, but also support unique selling points and are efficient helpers for any team. Smart Robotics is aimed at the new technologies in robotics.

In combination with smart media, knowledge is conveyed that enables innovative media developments. The latest technological concepts lead to media support for entire lifeworlds and make them fit for the future in terms of people. In this context, smart means an interaction of the latest technology with innovative media implementation in order to optimally support people in various areas of life.

Additional electives

Regardless of which AI degree program and which AI focus you ultimately choose, you will still have the opportunity to study individual subjects from the other AI key areas via your additional elective modules.

Course of studies

Your studies usually last seven semesters and lead to the academic degree "Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence".

The Bachelor's program Artificial Intelligence - International is divided into three study sections. The first study section begins with a bilingual, international STARTER semester with the following modules:

  • Robotics, Programming, Web & Math Starter
  • Intensive English/German language courses and a module on international affairs
  • All subjects in the first bilingual semester include German & English language elements.

From the second semester on, the language of instruction is German. Semesters two and three provide basic AI & Computer Science knowledge and include the following modules:

  • Classical AI, Ethics and Interaction
  • Programming Python and C & C++
  • Theoretical and Practical Computer Science
  • Mathematics, Repetition & Stochastics

In the second part of the course (semesters four to six), the fundamentals are deepened and the practical phase is prepared and carried out:

  • Machine Learning, Computer Vision & Big Data
  • Programming Java and Java Script
  • Data Engineering, Data Analytics & Cloud Computing
  • Algorithms and Data Structures, Mobile & Ubiquitous Computing
  • Practical phase in a company (abroad)
  • Electives as well as an "AI-Spring-School

The third and final stage of study is completed by the prospective graduates and specialists in the field of artificial intelligence in the seventh semester of study with the bachelor's thesis and the following modules:

  • AI Project
  • Deep Learning and Visualization & Explanation Components.
  • Bachelor seminar and Bachelor thesis.
